Austria Trip

austria_intro

Welcome to the fresh new blog for IAMWHY clothing. We just spent the whole weekend getting things ready for today. We have been so busy around the office that we haven’t had a chance to get the blog going.

So for the first entry we thought we would talk about the Iamwhy snowboarding trip we had back in January. Just to make things clear (This is where I start making excuses ;-) ) I do not claim to be a good writer or communicate that great in person, but ill try get my point across.

So far the iamwhy team has been going on snowboarding trips for the last 3 years after a year of hard work on the brand. This year was the first time that I (Don-the iamwhy never around to help web guy) joined the trip. Also being the first time I have tried snowboarding.

Caz and Mike started planning the Jan 2009 trip at the end of the 2008 trip already to make sure that the next yearly trip goes to plan. Our accommodation was booked from the 17th of Jan until the 31st Jan. All together we were 6 people and 1 dog going on the trip.

Getting there.. We all got there from different locations.

This is what went down!

Caz and Mike stuffed the iamwhy van and started driving from Cornwall in the UK on the 15th of Jan driving through France, Brussels, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and ending up in Innsbruck, Austria after more than 48 hours of driving and one overnight stop in Germany.

Mark and Amy left Heathrow on the 17th and went to Vienna and then Innsbruck ( That’s something the rest of us should have done ;-) )

I had a 2 hour bus ride at 3 in the morning from my town to Dublin after after staying up the whole night packing and surfing the web. Once at the Dublin airport I had a 4 hour wait for my flight to Salzburg Austria. I arrived in Salzburg not knowing where I should go.. Innsbruck or straight to Gerlos.

After trying to communicate with the locals I just jumped onto a bus from the airport and went to the main train station. From the train station I decided to go to Innsbruck to meet up with Caz en Mike then drive to Gerlos.

At the same time I was on my way from Dublin my girlfriend took a bus from Prague to Innsbruck. I think it must have been 18 hours or something crazy like that. She got there before all of us and picked me up with Caz and Mike at the Innsbruck train station. By that time Mark and Amy had arrived at the Innsbruck airport. The 6 of us plus some snowboards crammed into the iamwhy van and headed for Gerlos. I was in the boot with all the food.. Good Times!

Time to snowboard
Sunday 18th was the first day on the snow for us. For me it was the first time snowboarding. But having skated my whole life i knew it wont be that bad. I spent the first two days on the bunny slope trying to figure out what to do.. By the 3rd day i was hitting the blue run!
Day 4 Was spent relaxing by some of us and walking around Gerlos.
Day 5 i was getting super comfortable on the board and followed the rest of the guys down a red run and then one monster black run ;-)

Mike and Mark have been snowboarding for a long time so they were hitting every bit of off piste they could find and i was just dying to join them. Having been into extreme sports my whole life i kinda pushed myself an extra bit to get to a level where i could join them.

Day 6 First thing we did was went straight to the snow park! This is where i got my first taste of a little snow jump and a bit of snow ;-)

The rest of the days were spent hitting every run and off piste section that we could find at the Gerlos mountain. The day after i hit my head doing something stupid we went to the Mayrhofen resort that’s about 40 minutes from Gerlos to ride some new mountains.
I spent maybe 2 hours on the mountain feeling so uncomfortable after the previous days knock on the head, so me and the lady decided to go home and relax a bit. On the way back to the bottom we got into a little fight with one of the locals so it was just not a great day for me.

All together we spent 14 days in Austria and 10 out of those days were spent snowboarding from 09:00 in the morning when they open until 16:30 in the afternoon when they stop the lifts. This was my first snowboarding trip and i have to say im so addicted right now!

Thanks for reading!
Don
